What is a Life Path number, and how to work yours out.

One number, drawn from your birth date, that names the theme your whole life keeps circling back to. Here is how to find yours.

Your Life Path number is the core theme of your life, found by adding every digit of your birth date down to a single number. Where your Personal Year names the season you are in right now, your Life Path does not move. It is the same number at seven and at seventy, the thread underneath every year the numbers describe.

How to calculate it

Write your birth date out in full, day, month, and year, then add every single digit together. Keep reducing the total until one digit remains, with one exception: if you land on 11, 22, or 33 partway through, stop there. Those three are master numbers, and reducing them further loses what makes them worth naming.

Say you were born on 3 June 1992. Written out, that is 03 06 1992. Add every digit: 0 + 3 + 0 + 6 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 2, which comes to 30. Reduce once more, 3 + 0, and you land on 3. That person is a 3 Life Path.

If your total ever lands on 11, 22, or 33, before or after the first reduction, that is where you stop. A 22 is not a 4 waiting to happen. It is its own number, and it is rare enough that it is worth naming honestly rather than flattening.

Occasionally the running total passes through 13, 14, 16, or 19 on the way down. When it does, numerology calls that a Karmic Debt, a separate layer with its own meaning. It is a real part of the system, and worth a closer look another time. For today, your final single digit is the number that matters.

What each number means

Why it matters in a reading

A number on its own is a keyword. Woven into a reading, it becomes something sturdier. An 8 Life Path asking about money is not a generic question, it is someone whose whole design is built for tangible results, which changes what a stuck season actually means for them (my Career reading works this layer in directly). A 7 Life Path who keeps getting the same withdrawn energy from a partner is not necessarily being shut out. A 7 retreats to think, and that looks like distance from the outside.

Your Life Path also sits underneath your Personal Year number, which is the same numerology system read on a shorter, moving clock. The Life Path is who you are built to be across the whole span. The Personal Year is which chapter of that story you are standing in this particular year. Read together, they stop contradicting each other and start explaining each other.

This is one lens of five. On its own it can flatter or oversimplify a person down to a keyword. Woven with astrology, the Chinese zodiac, the Personal Year, and the cards, it becomes one accurate layer in a fuller picture, not the whole of it.
