A tarot reading answers a question about the present moment using cards drawn for you now, while a birth chart reading describes the lasting pattern you were born with, calculated from the date, time and place of your birth. One is a snapshot and the other is a map. People often ask me which is more accurate, and it is the wrong question, because the two are not measuring the same thing.
What is a tarot reading?
A tarot deck has 78 cards. Twenty-two are the Major Arcana, which speak to the large turning points of a life. The other 56 are the Minor Arcana, four suits of 14 cards each, which speak to the everyday: work, feeling, thought, money. For a reading, cards are drawn and laid in a spread where every position has a job, such as what lies behind you, what stands in front of you, and what is asking for your attention.
The draw is made for one question at one time. Ask again in six months and the cards will be different, because you will be. That is the strength of tarot. It is very good at "what is going on here, and what am I not seeing?", and it works best when the question is well shaped (the guide on how to ask tarot a question covers that).
What is a birth chart reading?
A birth chart is a diagram of the sky at the minute you were born, seen from the place you were born. It records where the Sun, the Moon and the planets stood across the twelve signs, and which of the twelve houses, the areas of life, each one fell into. Nothing is drawn and nothing is left to the day. It is calculated, and it never changes.
What gets read from it is temperament: what you need in order to feel safe, how you love, how you work, where things come easily and where they have always taken effort. The sun, moon and rising guide is the gentlest way in if the chart is new to you.
The differences, side by side
What it needs from you. Tarot needs a question, or simply a willingness to be shown something. A birth chart needs three facts: your birth date, your birth time and your birth place.
What it describes. Tarot describes a moment, the situation as it stands and the way it is leaning. A chart describes a lifetime pattern, the person who keeps walking into situations like this one.
Whether it changes. A spread is new every time it is laid. A chart is fixed for life, although the planets keep moving, and where they stand today against your chart is part of what an astrologer reads.
What it is best for. Tarot suits decisions, crossroads and the things you cannot quite see from inside them. A chart suits the questions that begin "why do I always".
Which one should you choose?
If your question is specific and present, such as whether to take the job or what is standing between you and someone, start with the cards. A single question read across three cards is the Single Focus at my table, at $12. If you have no question at all and only a sense that something wants looking at, the clarity reading is built for exactly that.
If your question is really about you, why the same pattern keeps returning in love or in work, that is a chart question, and the cards alone will only show you the latest instance of it.
Most real questions are both. "Should I stay?" is a question about this month and about the person asking it.
Why I read them together
A card read with no context is read from a guidebook. The same card laid against two different charts says two different things, which is why the same cards can need different answers for different people. Every reading at my table sets the cards against your birth details for that reason.
The Celestial Blueprint, at $78, is the depth where the two fully meet. Your chart is cast from the minute and city you were born and woven through a ten-card spread, so the map and the moment are read as one piece, with three keepsake images to keep or print.
What neither one can promise
Neither a spread nor a chart fixes your future, and neither can decide another person's choices. A chart shows tendencies, not a sentence. A spread shows where things stand and which way they lean, not what must happen. Used honestly, both do the same quiet work: they help you see your situation clearly enough to choose well. If you would like to see what that looks like on the page before you decide, there is a real reading, start to finish.
Plainly answered
Is a tarot reading or a birth chart reading more accurate?
Neither is more accurate, because they measure different things. A tarot reading describes a present situation using cards drawn for one question at one time. A birth chart reading describes a lasting pattern calculated from your birth date, time and place. Neither one predicts a fixed future.
Do I need my birth time for a birth chart reading?
Yes, for a full chart. The rising sign changes roughly every two hours, and the rising sign sets the twelve houses, so without a birth time the houses cannot be read reliably. The Sun sign and the signs of the planets can still be read from the birth date alone.
Can tarot and a birth chart be combined in one reading?
Yes. At Sworn & Sealed the Celestial Blueprint, priced at $78, casts your birth chart from the minute and city you were born and weaves it through a ten-card tarot spread. It is delivered by email within 6 to 12 hours with three keepsake images.
