The houses at my table use the whole-sign system, the oldest and plainest method: your rising sign is the 1st house, the next sign along is the 2nd, and so on around the wheel.
So to find the 7th, count six signs on from your rising. The zodiac runs Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, then back to Aries. With Gemini rising, six signs on is Sagittarius. With Capricorn rising, six on brings you round past Pisces to Cancer.
Reading the sign on the 7th
The sign on your 7th house colours what partnership asks of you. Take the two examples above.
Gemini rising, with Sagittarius on the 7th, often meets the world quick and curious, then finds itself drawn to people who are broader, franker, and more certain of their beliefs. The partnership lesson is about meaning and freedom: a bond that grows when both people are allowed room to roam.
Capricorn rising, with Cancer on the 7th, tends to lead with composure and responsibility, and looks to partnership for the softness it does not always show in public. The lesson is about shelter, letting someone else take care of you for once.
The sign's ruling planet deepens the picture. Using modern rulerships, Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter and Cancer by the Moon, so where Jupiter or the Moon sits in that chart says more about how the partnership story plays out. This is why a sun sign horoscope can only go so far on love: it cannot see any of this.
What if my 7th house is empty?
It is the question I am asked most, and the answer is reassuring. A chart has ten bodies, the Sun, the Moon and eight planets, spread across twelve houses, so every chart has at least two empty houses and most have several. An empty 7th house does not mean no partner, a late marriage, or bad luck in love. It means the sign on the house and its ruling planet do the talking instead of a resident planet. Plenty of long, happy partnerships belong to people with nothing at all in their 7th.
The 7th is not the only love house
Romance has neighbours. The 5th house covers flirting, dating and falling for someone, the part that feels like play. The 8th covers intimacy, shared resources, and what binds two people once the first flush has settled. The 7th is where the commitment itself lives, the question of whether two people stand side by side. A reading that looks at all three will tell you more than any single one.
What the 7th house cannot tell you
It cannot name a person, give you a wedding date, or decide what someone else will choose. It describes a pattern in you, the kind of bond you are built to seek and the lessons you keep meeting in it. It does not fix an outcome. If a reading is ever presented as certain about another person's heart, treat that with care.
