The cost is evanescence: when the call ends, you keep what your memory kept, and memory is a poor archivist of hard news.
How to choose
If your question is specific and formed, writing serves it: the craft of asking a question that gets answered matters more than the medium. If your question is a tangle you cannot yet name, a conversation may untangle it faster. And if you are somewhere between, start written and small.
